HBO, Game of Thrones Stars Criticize Trump’s Meme: Don’t Misappropriate Show for ‘Political Purposes’

President Donald Trump‘s Game of Thrones meme to announce sanctions on Iran (yes, that’s a thing that happened) garnered some critical responses from HBO and some notable cast members from the hit series.
Game of Thrones was back in the news thanks to a huge Entertainment Weekly preview of the final season, and then Trump did this:

The meme was a flashy attempt at announcing the reimposing of sanctions on Iran days before the midterm elections.
HBO sent out a statement today saying, “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”
Additionally, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner––respectively, Arya and Sansa Stark––reacted on Twitter:
