Jake Tapper Doesn’t Buy Apple’s Excuse for iPhone Bug Replacing ‘Racist’ With ‘Trump’ – ‘What Do I Know?’

CNN’s Jake Tapper was skeptical of Apple’s explanation of a “bug” that replaces the word “racist” with “Trump” for some iPhone users.

Earlier this week, some iOS users reported that when they uttered the word “racist” while using the talk-to-text feature, their phones replaced the word with the last name of President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday’s The Lead, Tapper reported his CNN team had tested a phone to see if they had the same issue – and they did.

“Apple is working to fix what they’re calling a bug that briefly changes the word racist to the word Trump,” he said. “When you use the voice-to-text feature, I’m not making this up, we tested it at The Lead here and we saw it for ourselves. Watch and listen.

A female CNN production member uttered the word “racist,” and her phone changed the word to “Trump.”

While interviewing CNN Business writer Clare Duffy, Tapper said, “Clare, I have to say that is a very fishy glitch.”

Duffy replied, “Yeah, Jake, the company is saying essentially that the AI system behind its voice-to-text feature can occasionally type an incorrect word with phonetic overlap, essentially where that sounds similar to what a user was trying to say before quickly correcting, which is what we see happened here.”

Tapper responded, “I don’t sense a lot of phonetic overlap, but what do I know?”

Duffy added that Apple called the issue a “glitch” and that a fix was underway.

Trump attacked Apple in an all-caps statement on his Truth Social account Tuesday after the company’s shareholders voted against ending its DEI initiatives.

“APPLE SHOULD GET RID OF DEI RULES, NOT JUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THEM,” the president wrote. “DEI WAS A HOAX THAT HAS BEEN VERY BAD FOR OUR COUNTRY. DEI IS GONE!!!”
