James Carville Predicts Trump Will Rig 2026 Election, Could Declare Martial Law: ‘He’s Gonna See a Massive Defeat Coming’

Democratic strategist James Carville is concerned President Donald Trump could declare martial law ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Carville joined NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday, a day after he raised alarm during an interview with Jim Acosta about the president possibly tampering with elections. Carville said those who are concerned have a “reason to be scared.”

Carville told Cuomo he believes New Jersey and Virginia will be “Democratic blowouts” in the next elections and Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill will cost Republicans votes as well.

“He’s going to see a massive defeat coming, and he’ll try to do anything he can to extricate himself in that defeat, and I would not put it at all past him to try to call martial law or declare that there’s some kind of national emergency in the country or anything like that, because the hoof prints are coming, you can hear them, and they’re going to get shellacking in November of 2026,” the strategist said.

Bill O’Reilly and Stephen A. Smith also joined the panel discussion, with O’Reilly mocking Carville’s mention of “martial law,” calling it a “scare tactic” and arguing the economy will dictate the midterms.

“After hearing Carville, I’m buying a condo in Luxembourg tomorrow. I’m getting out. Martial law? My God. You’re going to have tanks in my driveway? Oh. No. I don’t believe that will happen. I’m willing to bet James 18 muffalettas that there will not be martial law. I’ll throw in some crawfish and whatever else he wants,” he said.

In the Acosta interview, Carville said he doesn’t put anything past Trump.

“He’s going see retirements and people are going to start coming in and saying, ‘You know, we’re getting ready to lose, I got to change I’ve got to get some distance.’ And he’s going to see all that coming. And I don’t put anything past him, nothing!” he said. “To try to call the election off, to do anything he can. He can think of things like that that we can’t because we’re not accustomed to thinking like that.”
