James Comer Insists Elon Musk ‘Very Transparent’ Because ‘He Tweets Multiple Times A Day’ After He Blocked Dem Subpoena Attempt

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) insisted Elon Musk is “very transparent” because of his constant tweeting following his blocking of an attempt by Democrats to subpoena the head of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency).

A House Oversight Committee hearing descened into chaos on Wednesday as Republicans blocked a motion by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) to subpoena Musk amid his DOGE slashing the federal workforce and spending.

On NewsNation’s On Balance on Thursday, Comer defended the decision to not subpoena Musk, saying he’s only been at the job for a few weeks. He also argued Musk is already “very transparent” because he “tweets multiple times a day” about his DOGE efforts.

Anchor Leland Vittert pushed back, arguing Republicans would be “screaming bloody murder” if a major Democratic Party donor like Alex Soros was anointed a special government employee with access to private data. A federal judge on Saturday blocked Musk’s DOGE on Saturday from accessing private data held by the Treasury Department, ahead of a Feb. 14 hearing to debate the legality of the actions.

Check out the exchange below:

LELAND VITTERT: “Are you scared of having Elon Musk before the committee?”

JAMES COMER: “Absolutely not. You know, Elon Musk is being very transparent. He’s tweeting multiple times a day about what thoughts he’s having, different aspects of the federal government he’s examining and things like that. I think as long as he’s being being transparent, I think that, you know, that eliminates a big part of what the Oversight Committee is about. We share his goal of trying to reduce wasteful spending. And you mentioned in the monologue that Trump’s picking issues that are popular with the American people. And I think the American people want someone in Washington to get their backs, get the backs of the taxpayers and try to find wasteful spending. And that’s what Musk is doing.”

VITTERT: “Fair enough. I think we could reasonably agree that if a victorious Kamala Harris had appointed Alex Soros to do basically what Elon Musk is doing, but for Democratic principles, Republicans would be screaming bloody murder and you’d want him questioned, wouldn’t you?”

COMER: “Well, the difference in Soros and Musk is Soros, I’ve never seen anything out of him other than checks that have been written to outside groups and things like that. We believe, as Republicans, Soros is a big behind the scenes guy, but there’s no transparency with Soros. With Musk, there’s complete transparency, maybe too much transparency with with his thoughts and things.”

VITTERT: “So we wouldn’t answering questions under oath clear a lot of things up for Americans who are upset. You think about recent polling, right? Okay. Economist YouGov polling among GOP voters, people who wanted Musk have a lot of influence. 47% of Republicans back in November of 2024. Now that’s down to 26%. If everything he’s doing so popular, why are the numbers going down?”

COMER: “Well, I think that Musk is extremely popular with the people I talk to. And I think the American people are fed up with a Congress that doesn’t seem to care about where their tax dollars are being spent. They’ve already uncovered lots of wasteful spending. I think that’s a big fear of the Democrats, that they’re afraid they’re going to be more pots of money going from places like Ukraine and other foreign countries that weren’t going where they were intended. Improper payments. That’s a big objective of Elon Musk and DOGE, to find where who’s defrauding the federal government and try to come up with a software system that will prevent cyber attacks and fraud from happening in all the different government agencies. So, look, I think as long as Elon Musk is transparent, I think we’ll be good with him. But I would love for us to come in front of Congress and but, look, he’s been there two weeks. I don’t think he’s hiding what he’s doing. I think he’s being very transparent. A lot of what he’s doing is what Trump talked about.”
