Jessica Williams Shuts Down Fox Commentators on Beyoncé Half-Time Show Outrage

PicMonkey-Collage-WilliamsSenior correspondent Jessica Williams led The Daily Show‘s examination of Beyoncé‘s Superbowl half-time show, where the singer focused on the element of Black empowerment hidden below the surface of the explosive choreography and popular performance.

“The black girl magic in that video was out of control!” Williams said, referring to the halftime show. Williams further elevated Beyoncé’s status with the following apt literary comparison: “[Beyoncé] was like a beautiful black Dumbledore, but wearing a really nice weave and three thousand dollars worth of Gucci, and that was just the tailgate before the big game.”

Of course, Williams dug in about references made by Fox Business’s Stuart Varney and Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who thought it was “outrageous” that Beyoncé injected racial politics into her show with homages to the Black Panthers and #BlackLivesMatter.

“Race was brought in because Beyoncé was brought in — and brace yourself, you might want to sit down for this, but Beyoncé is black.” Williams said, putting her foot down. “As a black person, you walk around everyday constantly reminded that you are black. We’re more likely to get paid less, we’re more likely to get sent to prison, and we’re more likely to win a dance competition. What? It’s not all bad.”

The comedian continued, “Are you saying that you can’t talk about race issues to middle America?”. She also sarcastically questioned how people could watch the physical brutality of football while arguing they were too delicate to deal with serious social issues.
