John Fetterman Praises Trump and Chides Democrats on Fox News: ‘Our Party Has Been Often Wrong’
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) chided members of his own party who were critical of President Donald Trump’s attack on Iran over the weekend during an appearance on Fox News Monday morning.
The junior senator from Pennsylvania immediately offered support for the attack on social media in the hours that followed, calling it the “correct move by POTUS.” He continued his iconoclastic habit of saying things that flout Democratic Party doctrine, which has made him something of a celebrity in conservative media circles, including on Fox.
Appearing on Fox’s America’s Newsroom, Fetterman was asked by Dana Perino how he sees the debate about the preemptive attack playing out politically.
“There’s going to be a lot of people in my party who are going to disagree with the strike in Iran,” he replied. “And I actually support that. I’ve always been calling for that thing. I think it was entirely appropriate. And again, there might be votes on that. So for me, that’s not a war. That was a very limited military exercise.”
After some brief technical difficulties, Fetterman ignored an opportunity to criticize Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who called to impeach President Trump following the attacks. Perino then pivoted to a poll revealing how many Americans were concerned about Iran gaining nuclear capability.
“A Fox News poll that we had last week said that 78 percent of people are very concerned about Iran getting a nuclear weapon,” she noted. “Obviously, that would include many Democrats as well. Do you think there are people in your party that are willing to make a pivot here and say, ‘good job to the military, Mr. President, you did the right thing, if we’re going to do anything more, come to us to Congress,’ or do you think that the knee-jerk reaction will prevail?”
“Absolutely. I mean, just because sometimes of my decision that President Trump did, it’s like, maybe like reflexively you have to be opposed to that,” Fetterman agreed. “For me, again, I’ve been always calling to destroy these nuclear facilities.”
“Now, let’s talk about the context in the middle of all that now, too,” he continued, broadening the conversation to the instability in the Middle East.
“Now, our party has been often wrong,” he said, surely to the delight of conservative Fox News viewers. “And they were pushing for a ceasefire last year. And now Israel pushed through that and has broken Hamas. And Hezbollah as well now, too. And now here it is right now, Israel has air supremacy over Iraq right now. And now, here’s where Iraq, I mean, excuse me, where Iran is right, right now their capabilities are severely limited. And now that was an entirely appropriate to finally take out those nuclear facilities. “
