Maddow to O’Malley: Why Have Dems Been Incredibly Unsuccessful in the South?

maddow o'malleyRachel Maddow kicked off tonight’s Democratic presidential forum by asking Martin O’Malley why the Democratic party has fared so poorly in the South.

The forum is being held in South Carolina, and so Maddow brought up how the state hasn’t voted for a Democrat for president since Jimmy Carter, hasn’t had a Democratic governor in over a decade, and has no Democrats in statewide office. She asked what the party is doing wrong.

O’Malley said that the Democrats need to make a strong case for being a champion of working people by talking about their economic future and emphasize certain beliefs Democrats hold dear.

Maddow still pointed out that there are very few Democrats in elected office in the entire south and asked if that’s really just because of a bad economic message.
