Maddow: Trump Polls Prove Republicans ‘Do Not Care’ About Winning

Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow attempted to shed some light on why exactly Donald Trump has remained at the top of nearly every major Republican presidential poll over the last few weeks, despite the fact that he not only trails Hillary Clinton, but also Bernie Sanders, in hypothetical general election match-ups, according to a new Quinnipiac University survey.
To answer this question, Maddow said you have to look beneath the surface of a recent NBC/Marist poll that found Trump in first and second place, respectively, in New Hampshire and Iowa. When voters in those two states were asked which was more important to them, a candidate who shares their positions on the issues or one who has the best chance of actually winning the presidency, they chose the former by a two-to-one margin:

“Republican voters do not care! They want their Donald Trump,” Maddow said of the general election factor. In her view, that’s not an “interesting thing” about Trump, but rather an interesting thing about Republican voters. “They know he would lose, but they like him anyway.”
Looking forward to next week’s Fox News debate, at which Trump will literally be standing centerstage, Maddow said, “It really will be the Trump show. This whole Republican presidential nominating process has become the Donald Trump show.”
“Fox, are you sure you want to run the Republican presidential primary like this?” she asked.
