Maddow: Westboro Baptist Church So Vile, They Brought Out ‘Best in People’
Rachel Maddow made the case Friday night that the absolute vile behavior of the Westboro Baptist Church and recently-passed leader Fred Phelps so offended average Americans that the people who love saying “God hates fags” did so much to help advance the cause of gay rights. And beyond that, their vile protests “actually did bring out the best in people.”
Maddow recounted the church’s history of “trolling the whole country” by protesting at the funeral of anyone and everyone they could think of, most egregiously fallen soldiers. Because, in their minds, “there is nothing to celebrate about America as a nation as long as America targets the existence of openly-gay people,” and so killing dead soldiers is God’s punishment for America allowing gay people to be happy and free.
And yet, Maddow said, they’ve been an “American inspiration” that caused people by the score to rise up against them and reject their horrible bigotry, and have “indirectly caused a lot of good works out of our own human revulsion of their cruelty.”
