Maher Grills GOP Rep. on Recent John McCain Attacks: ‘This Doesn’t Bother You and Other Veterans?’

On Friday night, Bill Maher sat down with Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) for a wide-ranging discussion, including the recent attacks made against Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

McCain, who is recovering from brain cancer, faced numerous attacks this week after he expressed his dissent for President Trump‘s nominee for CIA Director Gina Haspel for failing to call torture “immoral.” Frequent Fox News guest Thomas McInerney, who has since been banned, claimed “torture worked” on McCain and that people called him “Songbird John.” Then to pile on, White House aide Kelly Sadler jokingly dismissed McCain’s vote, saying he’s “dying anyway.”

Maher pressed the congressman, who did three tours as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan, about his thoughts on these McCain attacks as well as Trump’s own attack of McCain during the election when he said he “doesn’t like people who were captured.”

“C’mon, this doesn’t bother you and other veterans?” Maher asked.

Hunter responded by saying that in the military, he has made “crass” jokes even about McCain but when you’re a presidential candidate, it “shouldn’t be done.”

“I mean, to make fun of a guy who was tortured,” Maher continued. “How long do you think Donald Trump would last under torture?”

“Not very long,” Hunter quickly responded.
