GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz Bashes FBI Over Cohen Raid: They’re ‘Covering Their Own Trail’ of FISA Abuses

Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was on Fox News Tuesday afternoon to argue that the FBI’s raid on Michael Cohen‘s office was part of the bureau’s plan to cover up the Justice Department’s FISA abuses.

The Florida congressman, speaking with Harris Faulkner on Outnumbered Overtime, expressed his hope that President Donald Trump won’t fire Robert Mueller (a possibility the president left open while speaking with reporters on Monday). However, Gaetz did say that Trump should consider firing Rod Rosenstein and Jeff Sessions, and that Congressional Republicans need to take greater action because “the inmates are running the asylum over at the Department of Justice.”

When asked to elaborate, Gaetz laid out his vision of House Judiciary Committee hearings for the top DOJ figures connected with the Russia investigation.

Are we really in a situation where Bob Mueller is no longer investigating crimes, he’s just investigating people? And if he finds out anything about those people he’s going to sick U.S. attorneys all over the country on them to ask questions that have nothing to do with foreign interference in our elections? If that’s the new standard, lets out it. Let’s debate it. Let’s have a discussion as a country about whether or not that is advantageous. My expectation is that there are no good answers and the Department of Justice is covering their own trail because they know they engaged in FISA abuses that they don’t want to be prosecuted for.
