Mitch McConnell: ‘I Didn’t Think President Trump Had a Chance to Win’

Mitch McConnell admits he was pleasantly surprised by Donald Trump winning the election.

Election night had more than one victory for McConnell, thanks to Republicans finally winning the state house in addition to the state senate and governorship (for the first time in over 90 years). But as he told KET’s Bob Goodman, he didn’t expect much else to be enthused about.

“I honestly thought we wouldn’t hold the U.S. Senate,” he said, “I thought we’d come up short, and I didn’t think President Trump had a chance to win.”

McConnell agrees with the sentiment that the Democrats’ big problem was that “they’re a party of groups” and white working class people felt they weren’t in those groups. He also praised Trump for how he “pierced the blue wall” in a way no one expected.
