Mitt Romney: ‘I Was Laughing At’ Clint Eastwood’s ‘Great Thrill’ Of A Speech

During his interview on Meet the Press, Mitt Romney weighed in on a series of topics, including a memorable part of his convention: Clint Eastwood‘s speech. Dismissing much of the criticism that’s surrounded Eastwood’s empty-chair speech, Romney called it a “great thrill.”

Asked whether the speech had him laughing or wincing, Romney replied, “Oh, I was laughing at Clint Eastwood.” He added, “Look, to have him get up and speak on my behalf was a great thrill.”

Eastwood made headlines with his ad libbing speech that included addressing an invisible President Barack Obama sitting in a chair next to the podium. Romney noted that he and Ann Romney have been longtime fans of Eastwood’s movies — and that he didn’t expect the actor-director to give a conventional political speech.

“You don’t expect to have a guy like Clint Eastwood get up and, you know, read some speech off a teleprompter like a politician,” Romney said. “You expect him to speak from the heart and that’s exactly what he did.”
