MSNBC Panel Pushes Back Against Sanders Over Gillibrand Tweet: Trump’s Mind Was ‘In the Gutter’
At today’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders criticized reporters and critics of President Donald Trump, telling them their mind was “in the gutter” if they thought his tweet attacking Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) contained sexual innuendo.
During an MSNBC discussion this afternoon, Deadline: White House host Nicolle Wallace and her panel basically piled on Sanders for defending Trump’s tweet while also taking aim at the president himself. Right off the bat, Wallace mockingly stated that they were the one with their “minds in the gutter.” She added that Sanders has a “very difficult job” and “today’s performance was ridiculous.”
The Washington Post‘s Ashley Parker agreed that Sanders job was tough and explained that the spokesperson “does a good job every day of keeping a very straight face in sort of going out and expressing disbelief that anyone would ever have possibly interpreted what the president said or tweeted in what seems to be exactly the way he intended it to be interpreted.” Meanwhile, MSNBC analyst Steve Schmidt felt that Sanders actually has “an easy job — to tell the truth to the American people.”
“She swore an oath to the Constitution of the United States which she disgraces every day as she serially lies hour after hour after hour every day,” he declared, pointing out that it was obvious that Trump’s tweet contained sexual innuendo.
Law professor Joyce Vance stated that Trump seemed to have a “little bit of a jump the shark moment” today, adding that no one can take “this with seriousness” and that it “rubs off on the credibility” of those in the White House.
“There’s no doubt about what that tweet this morning went, no reasonable person could read it any other way,” she concluded. “With all due respect to Sarah Sanders’ belief that my mind was in the gutter, I think the president’s clearly was this morning.”
