According to MSNBC’s Ari Melber, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is the only Republican candidate for president who is striking the “right” tone on NSA surveillance and the Patriot Act. He’s also the only one who is likely to get this kind of praise on MSNBC.

In a monologue during Wednesday’s edition of The Cycle, Melber gave credit to Paul for creating the conditions that could see the expiration of elements of the Patriot Act this coming weekend. The host presented the graphic below to illustrate how a simple reform in the alternative USA Freedom Act, which is currently being blocked by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), would give control of Americans’ meta-data back to the phone companies:

“All of this means that for the first time since 9/11, Congress is close to actually curtailing some of the excesses in a War on Terror that has run 14 years with no end in sight,” Melber said. In addition to the journalists and activists who have fought against government surveillance, the host also credited the “leadership” of Paul who “forced the Senate to confront it when many wanted to duck in and start their vacation” last week.
