MSNBC’s Joy Reid Warns Her Viewers Before Airing ‘Racial Slur’ NFL Team Name

While reporting upon the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s decision to cancel the trademark registration of the Washington Redskins, MSNBC host Joy Reid made known her distaste for the nickname by warning her viewers whenever someone else was about to say it.

The heated debate surrounding the NFL team’s name has boiled down to the nickname’s alleged disparagement of Native Americans. In response to the USPTO’s decision, team owner Dan Snyder has maintained that the name — “a racial slur I won’t say here,” as Reid told her viewers — is not going anywhere.

Later in her segment, Reid introduced a clip of Sen. Harry Reid responding to Snyder, but made her distaste for “Redskins” known once more by telling her audience: “I just warn people, he does use the name of the team. So, I’m just going to warn you guys about that in advance.”

Conservative media blog NewsBusters argues that Reid’s hypersensitivity is odd considering her colleagues have said things like “niggerization,” “tea bagger,” and “s-h-i-t” on the air without such similar warnings.
