MSNBC’s Katy Tur Asks If Trump Will Use Charlie Kirk Shooting ‘As a Justification For Something’ Bad

MSNBC anchor Katy Tur raised eyebrows on Wednesday in the aftermath of the shooting of pro-Trump activist Charlie Kirk with her subsequent coverage of the horrific incident. Tur spoke to Axios’s Marc Caputo and at one point suggested that President Donald Trump may use the shooting as a “justification for something” bad.

During the exchange, Caputo suggested it’s important for “the audience to understand who Charlie Kirk is, he’s 31, he is very young. He founded this group, Turning Point USA, which is one of the premier, if not the premier, conservative political groups around, and it started to eclipse the Conservative Political Action Conference or Committee, the CPAC conference that’s held every year.”

“He grew very close to Donald Trump. He could certainly be said to be a Donald Trump confidant in good standing, someone who is incredibly supportive of the president and whom the president would call sort of randomly to chat with. I’ve been on Charlie’s show,” Caputo continued, adding:

He’s a very smart guy. He is the voice of young conservatives. And I don’t know his condition—I don’t think any of us do currently—but it’s been said that assassination is the extreme form of censorship. Whether he’s actually been killed or not, we don’t know, but it certainly looks like a very politically motivated shooting. And the aftereffects of this are certainly going to be terrible.

“I mentioned the aftereffects because, as we were just talking about a moment ago with Alan, after one of the DOGE employees was allegedly attacked in Washington, D.C., that’s what Donald Trump used as justification to send in federal troops into Washington, D.C., to get things under control—the carjacking situation. He used that,” Tur replied, adding:

And I know it’s hard to predict the future, Mark, but you can imagine the administration using this as a justification for something.

“I must admit I’m at a loss to guess as to what happens next, but Charlie Kirk had pioneered this sort of technique, this sort of style of going to campuses, having these sort of open-air debates, these open-air arguments, and it sort of spread to other figures and other influential figures, but he was the one who sort of pioneered this,” Caputo replied, dodging the question to discuss Kirk’s career more.

“And I think, going forward now, others who engage in this activity are going to have to think more closely, more intensely, about security because clearly he’s not safe, and people who are putting themselves in these political positions are not safe because there are madmen with guns out there who are willing to use them and silence the people they don’t like. It’s a horrifying thing to think about, and unfortunately it’s horrifying to think that this won’t be the last time that this happens,” Caputo concluded.
