NBC Admits Brian Williams Got Christie Report Wrong
NBC News acknowledged Friday that Nightly News anchor Brian Williams had mispreported the latest news on Gov. Chris Christie‘s bridge scandal the night before.
According to reports, federal investigators had “thus far uncovered no evidence” connecting the New Jersey governor to the scandalous 2013 George Washington Bridge closures — a situation colloquially known as “Bridgegate.”
During his Thursday evening broadcast, however, Williams said that “federal charges are now ruled out for Chris Christie in the affair that came to be known as Bridgegate.”
That is untrue, as a spokesperson for New Jersey’s U.S. Attorney confirmed to the Asbury Park Press that “the investigation is continuing” and nothing is final yet.
In a statement to the paper, NBC spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said: “An unscripted line of our Nightly News report was imprecise and implied that a final decision had been reached.”
