NBC Correspondent Shows Off Rubber Bullet That Struck Producer During LA Protests

NBC News correspondent Morgan Chesky showed off a rubber bullet that struck his producer while covering the ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

Chesky joined Jen Psaki on Wednesday evening for MSNBC’s The Briefing, where he gave an update on immigration protests in Los Angeles. The reporter has just gone through what he described as a chaotic scene where police and protesters were hurling objects at one another outside Los Angeles City Hall.

“Things were thrown at each other, both sides, to the point where police deployed flashbangs, as well as what I’m holding right here. This is one of the rubber bullets that struck our producer here as we moved back into a safer location,” Chesky reported as he showed off the projectile for the camera.

Chesky walked the sidewalk to show the situation had calmed, but he noted officers were waiting in riot gear as others held a line outside City Hall.

The Los Angeles protests have set up a legal battle between California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and President Donald Trump. Newsom has objected to Trump’s announcement that he’s mobilizing National Guard troops to help maintain order. The governor filed a motion for a temporary restraining order and claimed he was given no warning about the president’s decision, something the president has denied.

Chesky reported on Wednesday that the “patience” of law enforcement is “wearing somewhat thin” when it comes to protesters after his producer took the rubber bullet hit.

“There was a handful shot into the crowd, producer Jim’s doing just fine, and so everyone is safe and sound for now,” Chesky said, “but I think this reinforces the fact that authorities are definitely being more present, definitely being larger in number than we’ve seen in days past, and I think the patience with which they’re willing to deal with some of these crowds is wearing somewhat thin.”
