Fox News’ Outnumbered Debates Trump’s Divisiveness: ‘He’s Certainly Not Helping’
Fox News’ Outnumbered used their Christmas Day to reflect on various aspects of 2018, and one point, the panel discussed how politics and the media have continued to exacerbate sociopolitical divisions throughout the country.
After Harris Faulkner took note of recent stats about America’s divided state of affairs, the discussion turned to the question of how much of this has to do with Donald Trump. Melissa Francis acknowledged that Trump isn’t making the country more united, but determined that the president is just a reflection of a broader phenomenon.
“Everybody blames the president for the tone. I think that he is a symptom, not necessarily the cause. He’s certainly not helping, that is for sure. But I think a lot of the cause is social media where you see people say what they really think, and really hide behind the keyboard and stay much nastier things than they actually think. I think that there a lot of people on the right that think that the president is the first one to fight back against the left…”
Campus Reform editor-in-chief Lawrence Jones, the #OneLuckyGuy of the day, was frank as he admitted to losing all hope for unifying stability in 2019. He suggested that members of the media are partially responsible for the country’s hostilities because audiences take more notice of heated debates than in people who can be civil with each other in spite of their disagreements.
The panel continued by debating whether the country has been able to heal from the divisions of the 2016 election, and whether people can converse with their political opposites again without vilifying one another. Francis led the conversation’s end though when she remarked that Trump’s critics adamantly refuse to say anything positive about him.
“I think if the President cured Cancer they would say he was playing god and overpopulating the planet and ruining the environment with too many people. They’re so dug in. I hope not.”
