Parkland Dad Who Lost Daughter Rips Marco Rubio: He Never Called to Offer Condolences

Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter in the horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas last month, had some strong words this morning for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) during an appearance on MSNBC’s AM Joy. And besides criticizing the Florida senator for tweeting complaints about the Parkland survivors, Guttenberg also claimed that Rubio never reached out to him personally to offer condolences for his loss.

Host Joy Reid noted that Rubio sent out the following tweet that seemed to be aimed at students for being critical of him and his stance on gun control:

“Senator Rubio needs to stay out of this,” Guttenberg declared. “Clearly, he has nothing productive to add. The idea that he called me, those kids, not nice to him. I lost my daughter.”

Stating that the students survived a tragedy and have every right to speak up and demand action, Guttenberg exclaimed that Rubio has “no business being involved” if he couldn’t be productive. He then mentioned that Rubio was the only elected official that represents him that didn’t contact him after his daughter was killed.

“Senator Rubio, not even a tweet,” he stated. “Not even a text or phone call. The idea that he is going to judge me and the other families when he is the only person that didn’t personally reach out, I am sorry. You have no standing to speak to us on this issue. You lost that long ago.”

Guttenberg added that if Rubio wants to meet with him one-on-one and keep the cameras out, he “would be happy to do that.”

During last month’s emotionally raw CNN town hall on the Parkland shooting, Guttenberg confronted Rubio, telling the lawmaker that his comments following the shooting were “pathetically weak” while challenging Rubio on his positions on gun control.
