‘Really?!’ CBS’s Stahl Has To Check If Pelosi Seriously Saying Biden Belongs On Mount Rushmore

CBS News correspondent Lesley Stahl had to check whether former Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi was being serious when she said Sunday that President Joe Biden has been a “Mount Rushmore kind of president.”

The California Democrat sat down with Stahl for the latest edition of Sunday Morning on CBS News to discuss her career, her new book, and recent politics.

On the subject of Biden dropping out of the race, Pelosi pleaded innocence on any conspiring with others to persuade him, but said she had confidence he would make the right decision whatever it might be.

When Stahl asked whether Pelosi had noticed any “decline” in Biden’s abilities, the Democratic leader flatly stated “no.”

As Pelosi attributed accomplishments to Biden, she called him, “Such a consequential president of the United States, a Mount Rushmore kind of president of the United States.”

Stahl responded with bemused surprise, asking, “Are you really saying that he belongs up there on Mount Rushmore? Lincoln and Joe Biden?”

“You’ve got Teddy Roosevelt up there!” replied Pelosi. She quickly allowed that Roosevelt could stay, though, and would not need to be replaced. “You can add Biden,” she clarified.

“If there were a mount Rushmore for speakers of the House, Nancy Pelosi would certainly be up there,” Pelosi said as the glowing interview of the Democrat continued.

Pelosi’s new book “The Art of Power” from Simon & Shuster is out now, and among other topics covers the attack on her husband Paul Pelosi, which she partially blamed on Donald Trump, whom she describes in the book as having a “mental imbalance.”

PELOSI: Such a consequential president of the United States, a Mount Rushmore kind of president of the United States. Want to know what comes next.

STAHL: Are you really saying that he belongs up there on Mount Rushmore? Lincoln and Joe Biden?

PELOSI: But you got Teddy Roosevelt up there, and he’s wonderful. I don’t say take him down, but you can add Biden.
