Actors Marisa Tomei and Rosanna Arquette — one of the many women to accuse disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct — celebrated the “silence breakers” in a moving speech at the 2018 SAG Awards on Sunday night.
“We are honored to be part of this supportive creative community and we are inspired that so many powerful voices aren’t silenced by the fear of retaliation,” Arquette said. “We can control our own destiny.”
“And Rosanna, you are one of the voices,” Tomei added. “You are one of the silence breakers and we all owe you a debt of gratitude.”
Arquette’s allegations against Weinstein were part of the bombshell New Yorker report that set off an avalanche of accusations against the producer — and eventually snowballed into the Me Too movement.
She claimed that Weinstein exposed himself to her and tried to force her hand towards his penis while wearing a bathrobe in a hotel room.
In their speech, Arquette and Tomei continued by listing off a number of actors who have spoken out against sexual harassment in Hollywood — including Asia Argento, Mira Sorvino, and Anthony Rapp, who accused actor Kevin Spacey of sexual assault.
Rapp responded to the emotional speech on Twitter, thanking Tomei for her “kind words and acknowledgment”:
Thank you @marisatomei for your kind words and acknowledgment. I wish you and everyone involved in this movement strength and courage. All the very best wishes to you.
