Sarah Sanders: ‘You’ll Have to Wait and See’ What Trump’s ‘Calm Before the Storm’ Means
During today’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was pressed on President Donald Trump’s cryptic “calm before the storm” remarks that he delivered to reporters at a White House photo-op last night. The president followed that up today by telling the press they’ll “find out” what it means while winking at them.
When asked by one reporter if the president meant military action by the remark, Sanders was vague and stated that the president doesn’t like to tip his hand.
“As we’ve said many times before, I know the president has — as I have said from this podium on quite a few occasions — never going to say in advance what the president is going to do,” the press secretary noted. “And as he said last night in addition to those comments you’ll have to wait and see.”
Pressed on whether or not the public should take Trump’s comments seriously, Sanders responded that the American people could take the president’s commitment to national security seriously.
A couple of minutes later, CNN political analyst April Ryan used the presidential remark to ask Sanders if this means the White House has “exhausted diplomacy.” The spokesperson referred to North Korea and how the administration was using economic and diplomatic pressure on the reclusive country, leading Ryan to ask if Trump’s comments were then referring to North Korea specifically.
“I’m using that as an example,” Sanders replied. “We have a lot of bad actors in the world, North Korea, Iran, several examples there.”
