Schieffer: Congress ‘Seems Delighted’ to Avoid Vote on War Resolution

Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer echoed a sentiment made previously by Fox News White House Correspondent Ed Henry when he said Sunday morning that Congress “seemed just delighted” to be out of session and thus avoiding a contentious war resolution vote.

Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who has written a resolution largely supporting President Barack Obama’s four-point strategy against ISIS, agreed.

“To the extent that there’s some culpability here, it’s probably on Congress’ shoulders,” Kaine said, noting the historically early adjournment. “If the president had asked Congress to stay, like David Cameron asked Parliament to come back, we would have. And the vote Congress passed on the one piece of it that we voted on, the training of Syrian opposition, showed strong bipartisan support in both houses.”

“We could have given the president, and more importantly given our servicemen and women, the strong backing of our political class before we asked them to risk their lives in what could be an extended mission,” Kaine concluded.
