Second-Grader Tells Michelle Obama Her Mother Is An Illegal Immigrant

There is no escaping the illegal immigration debate, not even in early education classrooms. Visiting an elementary school near DC, Michelle Obama got dragged into the illegal immigration debate by a concerned second-grader, who confessed to the First Lady that her mother was in the country illegally and that she was scared “Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”

The child, who was not identified, asked the First Lady whether it was true that her husband was “taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers,” a question that seemed to surprise Obama but, to her credit, she handled it gracefully, answering: “That is something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right?”

At that point the child interrupted Obama to tell her “my mom doesn’t have papers.” Obama calmly responded “well, we have to fix that, and everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens.”
