SNL Cold Open Lampoons NCAA, Duke University, and Charles Barkley
No more than half an hour after the University of Wisconsin upset the University of Kentucky to advance to the NCAA Men’s Championship Game against Duke University, SNL opened its show with a sketch lampooning the Final Four, the socioeconomic hypocrisy of the sport, and frequent analysts like Charles Barkley.
In this cold open, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announces that the team’s star freshman Jahlil Okafor will not be able to compete in the championship because he has to study for a big test. Several jokes are made as a swipe at the concept that NCAA athletes are unpaid and often thrown to the curb after their college careers are over, while the coaches are paid in millions.
Back in studio, Keenan Thompson did his best impression of Barkley, rife with self-deprecating humor and goofiness cluelessness.
