SNL’s Kenan Thompson: Pete Davidson ‘Missed the Mark’ With Joke About Crenshaw
Saturday Night Live comic Kenan Thompson called out fellow cast member Pete Davidson for his joke about a GOP congressional candidate losing his eye in combat, telling his colleague to be “more aware.”
“It’s tough when you’re fishing for jokes, like that’s how stand-ups feel, that there’s no real filters out there in the world when you’re trying to go for a great joke,” he said while on NBC’s Today show. “But at the same time, when you miss the mark, you’re offending people. So you have to … really be a little more aware.”
Thompson did defend Davidson’s image however, calling him a very “humble dude” with “a big heart.”
“I don’t think he goes out to offend people,” he added.
The offending joke made by Davidson on the last edition of SNL /em> was his comment on GOP candidate Dan Crenshaw, who is a former Navy SEAL who lost an eye to an IED blast while fighting in Afghanistan.
“You may be surprised to hear that he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie,” Davidson said. “I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”
Crenshaw tweeted a response to the remark:
Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.
