Tapper to Ex-DHS Secretary: Are You Concerned ‘With the Fawning Coverage’ of Kim Jong Un’s Sister?
Following the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, a number of mainstream media outlets have published pieces that have painted North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un’s sister in a positive light. With Kim Yo Jong present for the ceremony, CNN posted a glowing article on her, noting that she was “stealing the show” at the Pyeongchang Games.
With CNN and other outlets taking a ton of heat for these pieces and segments, it was definitely interesting to see a CNN anchor mention this coverage in a critical way this morning.
Speaking to former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on today’s State of the Union, Jake Tapper brought up Kim Yo Jong’s visit and her meeting with the South Korean president. After discussing the Trump administration’s North Korea policy a bit, Tapper then asked Johnson about the press the dictator’s sister has received.
“Do you have any concern with the fawning coverage that the North Korean sister of Kim Jong Un is getting and the fact that maybe she is managing to score a propaganda coup here, not just with people in the press here but people around the world including the South Koreans?” Tapper asked.
“I find the overture to be an interesting dynamic in this whole issue,” Johnson responded. “And you’re correct. She captured a lot of attention. Who knows? We’ll have to see. Again, my concern is that we not stumble into something that is not necessary.”
