‘There Goes the Teleprompter’: Speaker Johnson Blanks on Person He’s Introducing at RNC Amid Tech Glitch

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was left to fend for himself on day one of the Republican National Convention on Monday when the teleprompter abruptly crapped out.

Republicans formally nominated former President Donald Trump as the party’s nominee for a third consecutive time on Monday, when Trump also announced that he had selected Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) to be his vice presidential running mate.

Johnson addressed the crowd in the afternoon and introduced “the attorney general.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is now my honor to introduce the attorney general,” Johnson said, with the tone of his voice betraying that something was amiss. “And there goes the teleprompter,” he declared, prompting the crowd in Milwaukee to laugh. Within seconds, music began playing and Johnson exited the stage, which remained empty as the camera cut away.

The teleprompter issue was resolved and soon after, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird took to the stage.

Less than a year ago, Johnson was a backbencher in the House, but was thrust onto the national scene after a handful of Republicans managed to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). After three weeks, multiple nominations, and several failed votes, the House ultimately chose Johnson as its speaker.
