Trump Sec Duffy Attacks Gavin Newsom — Claims ‘Three More People Would Be Alive’ If Not For Him
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy accused California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) of trying to “pass the buck” after a deadly crash in his state.
Duffy joined John Roberts on Fox News’ America Reports on Friday following a freeway crash in California that led to three fatalities this week. An illegal immigrant is accused of operating the truck behind the crash with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) that Duffy said should have never been issued.
On America Reports, Duffy responded to Newsom blaming the federal government for the crash and the CDL being issued. According to Newsom, the state had no oversight and it was the federal government that approved the driver’s “employment authorization.”
Authorities have charged 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.
“If California had complied with the secretary’s emergency rule and prevented the upgrade of this individual’s driving privileges earlier this month, he would have never been able to get behind his big rig,” a statement from the Department of Transportation reads.
The “emergency rule” requires states to verify the legal status of drivers to restrict licenses being issued to non-citizens.
“Had Gavin followed our rules per DOT, this guy would have never been on the road. Three more people would be alive,” Duffy told Roberts.
Newsom, Duffy argued, did not follow DOT’s guidance.
He said:
It’s nice to see Gavin tap dance in a tweet, good for him, but the truth is we do set the guidelines by which licenses can be issued. We sent that guidance out. Gavin Newsom said, I’m not going to follow it, I’m going to allow this foreigner to get an upgraded license. That was Gavin Newsom’s choice. The states issue commercial drivers licenses. We give the guidance, they issue them. I gave the guidance. Gavin Newsom didn’t follow it. And three people are now dead because he refused to follow the rules that come from DOT. So, again, nice effort to try to pass the buck. But again, this is really simple stuff. Keep your citizens safe. Keep foreigners off the roads, especially those who aren’t trained. Stop giving licenses illegally to people who are not in the country lawfully. Very simple stuff, John.
