WATCH: Adam Sandler’s Wild Cameo and More in Conan O’Brien’s Politics-Free Oscars Opening

During the opening monologue from host Conan O’Brien at Sunday’s 97th Annual Academy Awards on ABC, comedian Adam Sandler had a wild cameo in street clothes, and actor John Lithgow made more than one appearance as part of the host’s hilarious and essentially politics-free remarks.

O’Brien opened with jokes about the films that were nominated and some of the actors in the room, and even shared some early headshots, including his own.

At one point comedian and late night start pointed out his friend Adam Sandler in the audience, jokingly slamming his wardrobe during the biggest night in Hollywood.

“Adam, what are you wearing?” O’Brien told Sandler. “You’re dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.”

“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” Sandler fired backed. “I like the way I look. Because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front my peers!”

Sandler then stands up to leave the ceremony, but not before running up to actor Timothée Chalamet and screaming, “Chalament!” into his ear.

Other segments brought out cheers and laughter from the Oscars crowd, including a bit where O’Brien claimed if an actors went on for too long during their acceptance speech then the camera would pan to Lithgow appearing disappointed.

O’Brien also took a minute to talk about the wildfires, during which he mentioned the notion of divisive politics but didn’t elaborate on it, and then returned to the laughs, appearing with Deadpool a sandworm from Dune during the musical number.
