WATCH: First Footage Shows Louvre Thief Drilling Into Display During Shocking Daylight Heist
New footage is giving the public a first look at one of the four masked men who scaled a balcony at the Louvre in France on Sunday and successfully made off with eight pieces of Napoleonic jewelry in a meticulously timed heist.
Armed with power tools and dressed in high-visibility jackets, the gang broke through a second-floor window of the country’s most famous museum, accessing the Apollon gallery via a maintenance area, where the French crown jewels are kept, before smashing display cases, and vanishing on motorbikes before guards could respond.
In the clip circulated by French news outlets and online, one suspect can be seen drilling at a glass case containing some of the items.
The raid, described by interior minister Laurent Nuñez as the work of “an experienced team who had clearly scouted the location,” lasted less than 10 minutes.
Among the stolen treasures are a sapphire necklace, a tiara, and earrings belonging to queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense. The robbers, however, dropped the crown of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugénie, the most valuable item, as they fled. The legendary Regent diamond, worth an estimated £45 million, remains safe.
No arrests have been made in the bold robbery. The manhunt for the perpetrators is ongoing.
