WATCH: LA Mayor Karen Bass Confronts ICE During MacArthur Park Raid
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass publicly confronted federal immigration agents on Monday morning during a dramatic ICE operation in MacArthur Park, denouncing the surprise raid as “unacceptable” and “outrageous.”
Federal officers, some on horseback and others in armored vehicles, descended on the Westlake park around 10:45 a.m. PT, prompting panic among locals and confusion on the ground. A Department of Homeland Security helicopter circled overhead. No arrests were made.
Bass, arriving in person less than half an hour later, immediately demanded to speak with the federal command.
On video captured by FOX 11, she’s seen asking: “Can I talk to ‘em?” before being handed a phone linked to agency leadership.
“They have completed their mission here,” she said, pressing for a swift exit. Seconds later, she declared to cameras: “They need to leave and they need to leave right now because this is unacceptable!”
Later, at a news conference, Bass underscored what she called the raid’s political motivations.
“In my opinion, it’s a political agenda of invoking fear and terror,” she said. “No plan other than fear, chaos, and politics.”
Bass said a group of summer camp children had been playing in the park just minutes before federal agents stormed in.
The dramatic standoff comes just weeks after widespread unrest over federal enforcement tactics across Southern California. Since early June, residents have accused ICE of targeting schools, courthouses, and workplaces in what advocates call politically motivated intimidation efforts.
