WATCH: New York Post Photographer Shot in the Head With Rubber Bullet During LA Riots
A New York Post photojournalist reporting on Los Angeles’ anti-ICE riots filmed the shocking moment he was shot in the head with a rubber bullet by police.
Toby Canham was documenting clashes between protesters and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers Sunday evening when an officer turned and fired at him from roughly 100 yards away. The projectile left a severe bruise across his forehead, and he later sought hospital treatment for whiplash.
“Fuck, fuck, I just got shot in the head!” Canham yells in the footage, his voice shaking.
The British Army veteran detailed the moment he was shot at to The Post: “Where I was hit, I was the only person overlooking the freeway. I wasn’t surrounded – so I was an easy target.”
“There was no justification for even aiming the rifle at me,” Canham said. “I could’ve lost an eye.”
The shooting occurred during a third night of violent unrest sparked by aggressive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations targeting undocumented migrants.
Protesters blocked the 101 Freeway, setting self-driving cars ablaze and hurling rocks at police, who responded with flashbangs and rubber bullets. Canham’s injury follows that of an Australian reporter hit under similar circumstances.
CHP has not commented, while the LAPD told Canham’s employer, The Post, that the incident “needs to be investigated.”
