WATCH: Trump Does Not Place His Hand on Bible While Taking the Oath of Office

President Donald Trump did not place his hand on the Holy Bible Monday as he was swearing into office for a second time, multiple clips of his inauguration show.

Trump was sworn in by US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts at 12:01 ET Monday to begin his second term in the White House.

The commander-in-chief’s wife First Lady Melania Trump stood by his side as he recited the oath with both a family Bible and the Lincoln Bible stacked on top of one another.

Rather than place his left hand on the two Bibles, Trump kept it to his side as he he raised his right. Footage from CNN, Fox News, Fox Business, and MSNBC shows his left hand remained at his side throughout his reciting the oath.

As Town & Country noted, Trump had planned to take his oath with his family Bible as well as the historic Lincoln Bible, just as he did in January 2017:

At his first inauguration in 2017, Trump used the Lincoln Bible (in a protective box) as well as a family Bible given to him by his mother in 1955, two days before his ninth birthday. Today, he will use the same two bibles.

While Article II Section I of the Constitution requires presidents to take the oath of office, there is no requirement for them to use a religious text, or any text at all, while doing so— but almost all of them have done so on a Bible. The choice of which Bible to use is very personal and varied. Most incoming presidents have chosen a family Bible or one used by a former president. Additionally, some presidents have taken their oath with the Bible closed, while others have opened the Bible to a specific passage that is meaningful to them. And a few presidents didn’t use one at all.
