‘We?’ MSNBC Panel Questions Why JD Vance Seems Like ‘Part of the Team’ on Bolton Raid
Ali Velshi and his guests on Saturday questioned why Vice President J.D. Vance sounded so involved with the FBI’s unorthodox raid on the home of former national security advisor John Bolton.
Velshi played a portion of Vance’s interview with NBC News’s Kristen Welker, who asked, “What’s at the root of this? Is this about classified documents?”
“Well, I’ll let the FBI speak to that,” Vance began. “Classified documents are certainly part of it, but I think that there’s a broad concern about Ambassador Bolton. They’re going to look into it. And like I said, if there’s no crime here, we’re not going to prosecute it.”
“What’s with the ‘we’?” Velshi asked. “Trump knew nothing about it, but Vance seems to be part of the team investigating Bolton. Seems to know a lot about it.”
Panelist Tom Nichols with The Atlantic decried the raid as a “fishing expedition.”
“The way Vance talked about it, he said, ‘Yeah, that’s part of it. But we just want to take a look.’ Basically, this is now, it seems — and I’m only going on what the vice president said — It’s almost like a fishing expedition,” Nichols said. “‘We’re just going to poke around and see if this guy has any dirt in his background.’ That’s not the way the American system works. But I don’t think that Vance or Trump leading the most un-American, most anti-constitutional, most lawless administration in American history really care about that.”
Nichols continued, “You could say, ‘We just want to poke around.’ But normally that’s done by contacting the target’s lawyers and saying, we’d like to have a discussion…it’s not usually done with raiding a guy’s house at six in the morning, while the FBI attempt to intimidate.”
Velshi added, “While the head of the FBI was tweeting about it. It was wild. It was like an O.J. chase.”
