Biden Says He Hopes McCarthy Has a ‘Personal Revelation’ After Shutdown Narrowly Averted
President Joe Biden says he hopes House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has a “personal revelation” following the government shutdown fight.
Speaking with reporters in the White House Sunday, the president was prompted to weigh in on the proposed challenge to McCarthy’s leadership by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
“Should Democrats vote to help him keep that job?” A reporter asked.
“I don’t have a vote on that matter,” Biden said. “I will leave that to the leadership of the House and the Senate.”
Later, Biden was asked whether McCarthy will have the ability to withstand pressure from some in his caucus to strike any bipartisan agreement.
“Are you worried he is going to be forced by his fellow Republicans to back away from any deal he cuts with you?” A reporter asked.
“I hope his experience for the speaker has been one of personal revelation,” Biden said. “I am not being facetious.”
