CNN Analyst Hints at Negative Impact of Trump’s 90-Day Tariff Pause: ‘Don’t Know How You Could Possibly Think the US Is a Sound’ Place to Invest
A financial analyst Wednesday explained why President Donald Trump’s decision to pause tariffs could actually have negative long-term impact.
On Wednesday afternoon, Trump announced in a Truth Social post that he would temporarily halt reciprocal tariffs on the 75 countries who have reached out to the U.S. to negotiate. The pause, announced a little over 12 hours after the tariffs went into effect, will last for 90 days. The baseline tariff rate of 10% will remain, however. Trump also revealed that China’s tariffs would be increased — from 104% to 125% — due to a “lack of respect.”
In response to the tariff pause, the stock market immediately surged.
While Trump officials and other Republicans praised Trump for purportedly forcing other countries to the negotiating table to avoid the tariffs, some were not as enthused. On CNN News Central, General Economics VP Scott Lincicome argued that Trump’s sudden decision to pull back on tariffs could have a significant impact on the way other countries view the U.S.
“Right, and we still have the automotive tariffs,” Lincicome said. “We have the Canada-Mexico fentanyl tariffs. We have new investigations of lumber and copper. We have the steel and aluminum tariffs. So, yeah, we can be happy a bit that the worst aspects of these reciprocal tariffs have been paused; but we’re certainly not out of the woods — especially with this global 10% tariff in place. And, you know, it really puts the lie to the idea that these were about reciprocity at all. It’s just a global tariff. It’s just protectionism.
“And finally, I think it’s important to remember that I don’t know — I mean, markets are relieved a bit — but I don’t know how you could possibly think the U.S. is a sound, safe, and stable place to invest when the president is flipping tariffs on and off like a light switch; and there could be more of these things in a mere 90 days. So a bit of a reprieve, but we’re definitely not out of the woods.”
