President Donald Trump denied reports that he is working with Israel to “blow Iran into smithereens” and said, instead, he wants the country to be “great” while calling for a deal that would guarantee nuclear disarmament.

The announcement came one day after Trump announced “tough” new measures he would deploy against Iran in a presidential memorandum Tuesday authorizing more aggressive measures toward Iran.

In the Oval Office, one reporter asked Trump what the consequence would be if there were a successful attempt on his life by Tehran, to which he replied that he had left instructions that Iran be “obliterated.” Several news outlets reported on the comments.

On the campaign trail in September, following two assassination attempts against him by US citizens, Trump baselessly suggested that Iran might have been involved and called for the country to be blown to “smithereens” if it hurt any presidential candidate.

In a post to Truth Social early Wednesday, Trump offered a path to negotiations and shared his aspiration that the country become “successful” but “one that cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens,” ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED. I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will let Iran peacefully grow and prosper. We should start working on it immediately, and have a big Middle East Celebration when it is signed and completed. God Bless the Middle East!

The post also comes one day after the president proposed that the US “take over” Gaza to develop the territory after meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
