JUST IN: 67 Feared Dead in Washington DC Air Crash
Gruesome details have emerged following Wednesday night’s tragic air crash between an American Airlines passenger jet and a Blackhawk helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington details.
While the emergency rescue efforts are ongoing, the likelihood of any survivors has nearly waned completely, and the expected body count appears to be 67 individuals who perished in this tragic disaster.
The American Airlines jetliner was flying into Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport from Wichita, reportedly carrying 64 individuals, including passengers and crew. The Blackhawk helicopter is thought to have had three crew members on board. Video of the crash shows a rather large and immediate debris field, which suggests that no individual would survive such an explosive crash.
Officials have told reporters on the scene they expect no survivors, “We are now at a point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. At this point, we do not believe there are any survivors.”
A reporter asked DC Police Chief John Donnelly about the expected next phase of the investigation, asking, “How confident are you that you will be able to recover all 67 of these bodies, and can you speak to some of the debris that’s also being pulled out of the river?”
“The next phase of this operation is going to be led by the NTSB,” Donnelly replied. “All of us are working together to search the area, and — I’m confident that we will do that. And that will take us a little bit of time and equipment. As far as the things being collected. I don’t have personal knowledge. I note that we have been collecting debris you would expect to see from a plane.”
