Trump’s Porn Star Hush Money Trial Given a Firm Start Date
After former President Donald Trump got a legal reprieve in his civil fraud trial, another New York judge ruled that he will stand trial in the criminal hush money case involving Stormy Daniels on April 15.
Judge Juan Merchan ruled on Monday that there will be no further delays in District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case against Trump allegedly paying the adult film star to keep quiet about a sexual affair they had shortly after his youngest son was born. This trial will mark the first time a former president will be tried in criminal court.
Trump’s legal team attempted to have the trial delayed, citing new documents that needed to be reviewed as well as accusing Bragg’s office of prosecutorial misconduct. Merchan had reportedly seemed skeptical before issuing his ruling, even calling out Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche, a former federal prosecutor, for what appeared to be a delay tactic:
You were there 13 years, so you know that the defense has the same ability as the prosecution to obtain these documents. …You could have very easily done exactly what you did in January but for whatever reason you waited until two months before trial.
Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in order to hide the affair while he was running for president in 2016. He had pleaded not guilty.
