Reporter Asks Biden If New Trump-Backed Speaker Will ‘Try To Overturn The Election?’ At International Press Conference

President Joe Biden was asked about the new Trump-approved speaker of the House’s record of election denialism — and the prospect he’d “try to overturn the election” again — during an international press conference.

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was elected speaker of the House Wednesday after 23 days of chaos, and despite a record of supporting ex-President Donald Trump’s attempt to overthrow the 2020 election. Johnson was the fourth candidate to try and fill the post vacated by former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy after failed bids by aRep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN).

Within minutes of that vote — literally as the swearing-in festivities were underway — President Biden held a joint press conference with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia in the Rose Garden of the White House with a full complement of U.S. and foreign press.

PBS White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López opened her questioning of the two leaders with a lengthy question detailing Johnson’s romance with the Trump election lies and asking the president if he’s worried it will happen again.

Biden was emphatic that the U.S. Constitution would hold:

LAURA BARRÓN-LÓPEZ: Mr. President, thank you. If I may, I have a breaking news question and then an Israel one.

First, after 22 days, House Republicans just elected Mike Johnson of Louisiana as the Speaker of the House. Johnson advocated conspiracy theories about voting machines and a rigged election in 2020. He encouraged his colleagues to join a lawsuit to invalidate the results of four states. So, if you win reelection in 2024, are you worried that a Speaker Johnson would again attempt to overturn the election?

PRESIDENT BIDEN: No.

LAURA BARRÓN-LÓPEZ: Why not?

PRESIDENT BIDEN: Because he can’t have — look, just like I was not worried that the last guy would be able to overturn the election. They have about 60 lawsuits, and they all went to the Supreme Court, and, every time, they lost. I understand the Constitution.
