A PAC supporting independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ran during the Super Bowl on Sunday, hoping to get the long-shot candidate in front of a lot of eyes — but other members of the Kennedy family were fuming.

Kennedy issued an apology on Twitter/X to his family after his cousins Mark and Bobby Shriver, the sons of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, publicly expressed their disapproval of the ad, which was released by American Values 2024. Kennedy wrote: “I’m so sorry if the Super Bowl advertisement caused anyone in my family pain” and explained that it didn’t come from his campaign, nor could his campaign have approved of the ad per FEC rules:

Maria Shriver, sister of Mark and Bobby, retweeted RFK Jr.’s apology to her account on Twitter/X.

However, as of this writing, the tweet containing the ad remains pinned to his account.

The ad, which lifted the “Kennedy For Me” campaign jingle originally used for the 1960 campaign of Kennedy’s uncle, former President John F. Kennedy, aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday. Not long after it aired, Bobby Shriver posted a strong condemnation of the ad: “My cousin’s Super Bowl ad used our uncle’s faces- and my Mother’s. She would be appalled by his deadly health care views. Respect for science, vaccines, & health care equity were in her DNA.”

Mark Shriver posted his solidarity with his brother about an hour later:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has promoted anti-vaccine opinions and other conspiracy theories, including anti-Semitic conspiracies about Covid-19. Several members of the Kennedy family have publicly denounced their relative and his presidential campaign, calling it “perilous for our country.”
