Ubiquitous billionaire Elon Musk mocked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the foreign leader’s requests for aid late Sunday night.

On X, Musk posted a popular meme image of an agitated young man with veins bulging out of his forehead with Zelensky’s face photoshopped in and the caption, “When it’s been 5 minutes and you haven’t asked for a billion dollars.”

Needless to say, Musk is facing some backlash for having done so.

“Ukraine has been invaded by a behemoth neighbor. Putin’s forces are murdering and brutalizing Ukrainians en masse. The Kremlin is seeking to destroy Ukraine. The Ukrainians are fighting for their right to exist. The contempt of some free people for them is … sickening,” commented National Review senior editor Jay Nordlinger.

“You can support Ukraine or not,” argued Commentary Magazine‘s Abe Greenwald, “But how are the aid requests of an invaded country a punchline? Forget morally. I mean logically. What’s ironic about it? What’s unexpected or out of proportion? Do besieged countries traditionally NOT ask allies for help?”

“Russian soldiers tied the hands of innocent civilians before shooting them. Rape is a weapon of war – death is how it ended for many. Children are routinely kidnapped, if not killed by Russian shelling,” observed Scottish MP Stewart MacDonald. “Musk mocks them because they ask the world for help. His mind is in the sewer.”

Some users responded to Musk’s meme with less-than-flattering ones involving Musk, including one depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin walking a dog with Musk’s face superimposed on it. Still others adopted a more earnest approach, asking the billionaire to imagine the position of Zelensky and his countrymen.

“Hey Elon, imagine if your own family was sheltering in Ukrainian basements, amidst the terrifying roars of missiles overhead – would you still post those offensive memes?” asked one Ukrainian-American.

Estimates have pegged the number of Ukrainian civilians killed since Russians invaded their western neighbor in February 2022 at between 25,000 and 40,000 alongside approximately 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
