‘That’s a No on Tariff Relief?’ The White House’s Stephen Miller Challenged on Suffering Small Businesses

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller responded to the Chamber of Commerce calling for “tariff relief” for small businesses by insisting businesses will reap the rewards of tax benefits if they move their dealings inside the United States.

At a White House press briefing on Thursday, a statement from the Chamber of Commerce was brought up in which they called for “immediate relief” for small businesses from President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

“The Chamber supports many of the President’s policy goals, including eliminating unfair trade and non-trade barriers, and driving American investment. At the same time, we have heard from a historic number of small businesses who have made it clear: they need immediate relief from tariffs,” Suzanne P. Clark, President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.

Miller waved off the need for tariff relief, insisting businesses should be doing everything within the United States. This, he urged, would lead to tax breaks that would offset costs being passed on to businesses due to Trump’s widespread tariffs.

Miller said:

The relief for small businesses is going to come in the form of the largest tax cut in American history. A tax cut, by the way, that every single Democrat is planning to vote against. They’re voting for a tax hike that every middle class family of $4,000. The president has made clear there will be 100% expensing for investment in the United States. Companies that invest in the United States will be able to deduct 100% of that cost from their tax liability. This will be the most pro-small business tax bill in American history. And at the same time what you have to understand about the plan is as they’re able to do that, as they’re able to reshore the supply chains, that also means they’ll pay no tariff. So you have the lowest tax environment and no tariff because their production and supply chains will be in the United States.

“So that’s a no on tariff relief for small businesses in the short term?” Miller was then asked.

“It’s a yes on tax relief for small businesses and again, you only pay the tariff for products made outside the United States,” Miller said.
