Trump-Backed Candidate For Governor Targeted in Brutal New Ad Highlighting Controversial Past

The Democratic Governor’s Association dropped a new ad attacking the GOP candidate for governor of North Carolina, Mark Robinson, just as the results were coming in that he would win his primary on Tuesday night.
The Democrat’s pouncing so quickly on Robinson is a signal they see him as a particularly weak candidate in a crucial swing state in 2024. Robinson, who was endorsed by Donald Trump ahead of the primary vote, has made headlines in the past for homophobic rhetoric and for even quoting Hitler in a Facebook post about racial pride – a comment he later defended.
“Abortion is a scourge that needs to be run out of this land,” Robinson says in the ad, which splices together a bunch of his past quotes.
“It’s not your body, it’s y’alls body. And yes, that includes the daddy,” he says next in the ad, which goes on to show him saying:
So many things were lost during the Civil Rights movement. So many freedoms were lost during the civil rights movement. They shouldn’t have been lost.
I’d love to pass laws to restrict abortion. We could pass a bill so you can’t have an abortion in North Carolina for any reason. This little minor thing that happens on January 6th, oh rights are horrible.
If there’s a movement in this country that is demonic and that is full of the spirit of the Antichrist, it is the transgender move.
Homosexuality, any of that filth, and yes, I call it filth.
Abortion is a scourge that needs to be run out of this land.
The ad ends with a screen saying, “Mark Robinson is dangerous. He’s too extreme to be the next governor of North Carolina.”
Robinson will face Democrat Josh Stein, the state attorney general, in the general election to replace term-limited Governor Roy Cooper (D). Robinson’s primary win also resulted in an avalanche of headlines pointing out his past rhetoric.
“Hitler-quoting candidate wins North Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary,” read the Guardian’s headline, while Slate’s headline read, “Whew, North Carolina’s Winning GOP Nominee for Governor Sure Has Said Some Things.”
“North Carolina Controversial Republican Mark Robinson Wins GOP Nod for Governor,” reported the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal.
Robinson’s rhetoric has also included calling Michelle Obama a “he,” referring to members of the LGBTQ community as “maggots,” and denying the Holocaust. The Advocate reported:
The conservative has also used his Facebook account to call reports of the Holocaust “hogwash” and deny the widely accepted fact that at least 6 million Jews were killed in Nazi Germany, according to local news outlet WRAL. The outlet also reported that Robinson went on a podcast hosted by an alleged cult leader in 2019 and endorsed the host’s remarks that Jewish bankers are one of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” next to Muslim people, China, and the CIA.
