After Documentary on Russian Doping Wins Oscar, Kimmel Jokes: ‘Putin Didn’t Rig This’

ABC Late night host Jimmy Kimmel, who is the year’s Oscar host, upped his politicized award show dialogue by joking about Russia’s attempts to swing America’s 2016 presidential election.

“Well, now at least we know Putin didn’t rig this competition, right?” Quipped Kimmel just after Icarus — a film on Russia’s doping and performance enhancing drug scandals — was awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Kimmel’s other political slights included poking fun at Vice President Mike Pence’s history of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and stances, as the host joked that moves with pro-gay messaging are made to annoy the former Indiana governor.

“We don’t make films like ‘Call Me By Your Name for money,” Kimmel said of the film made about a 1980s gay love story. “We make them to upset Mike Pence.”

Additionally, he joked about Donald Trump’s Twitter habits, saying that the a “tweet-storm from the president’s toilet” may be unleashed at some point during the awards show. He continued the riff by joking about the old age of the average Fox News viewer.

“Oscar is 90 years old tonight, which means he’s probably at home tonight watching Fox News,” said Kimmel.
