AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes — who apparently is quite the character — tweeted multiple times following news of the disappearance of flight QZ8501 late Saturday night, calling the incident his “worst nightmare” but pledging to stand by the airlines’ employees and the passengers’ families through what may be a protracted search mission.
The wealthy Malaysian owner said he was decamping to Surabaya, the Indonesian city from which the flight took off en route to Singapore.
The AirAsia twitter account has been posting regular updates on the search for the plane, which lost contact with traffic control last night, a virtual replay of the disappearance of flight MH370 last spring. Malaysia Airlines struggled with both PR and information dissemination in the wake of the plane’s disappearance.
