Alec Baldwin: Brian Williams Wanted to Please ‘Pro-Military, Conservative Crowd’

Alec Baldwin talked on his radio show this week about the Brian Williams controversy with George Stephanopoulos, sharing his theory that Williams was trying to please a “very pro-military, conservative crowd.”

Stephanopoulos, for his part, found it “surpsising” that Williams’ exaggerations about his war stories made it into the broadcast to begin with. He said the danger in broadcast news comes when there aren’t that many checks on a person like Williams or himself.

Baldwin, himself a former member of the NBC family, shared his theory that Williams “fell even consciously victim to something, which was wrapping himself in the flag and the glory of the military to please his audience.” He figured the NBC Nightly News audience is a conservative one that wants a “real palpable celebration of our fighting men and women” and Williams delivered.
